Thx Darren, I need to add Mike to the authors I need to read. I survived a widowmaker heart attack last summer. I'm doing very well with a sharper appreciation for the time I have left at 69 years old...🤔
Beautifully written as always my friend. And thanks for a reminder of how precious time is...especially someone else's. Now I am off to the bookstore to find a Perry book.
Mike is also one of my favorite writers and storytellers. He is excellent at describing what my grandfather called “the utter confoundification and ridiculous sublimity of everyday life.” I think Mike Perry is a sorta tired and kinda surprised by it all national treasure. And Darren, you are no slouch at writing and storytelling either!
Darren, This is a lovely reflection on the preciousness of time, the choices we make, the regrets we must offer, through imperfect ways. The Japanese term of “wabi sabi” springs forth.
From afar, I see you and Mike Perry share an intersection of grace, graciousness, humility and levity in moments of deep gravity. Most of all, you both possess and express the exceedingly rare ability to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.
Thank you for sharing your sentiments with wide and deep expression.
(As a non-influencer, one of your references encouraged me to explore Michael Perry’s writing. I have since read Truck, Coop, and Roughneck Grace. Thank you for that non-influence).
I have been following Mike for many years and the books you listed are also my favorites. Visiting Tom is a wonderful story of Mike’s elderly neighbor and his love and appreciation and affection for him; something we should all try to emulate. The lyrics in Mike’s music and The Logbeds shows have the same sensibilities as his books. Great writing is a result of great thinking.
I often say that reading Population 485 validated my experience of growing up (and still living) in small town Wisconsin, as being as relevant and meaningful as any other. Michael writes beautifully, and I have enjoyed hearing him speak on several occasions. Still have to catch a performance of his band “the Longbeds” sometime!

Busy people who generously give of their time, and their attention, should be celebrated - and I do.
Population 485 has one of the best setups for a punchline I have ever read—pure genius.
